Shanghai, China

I arrived in Shanghai today and happily put on pants for the first time since I left Seattle. It is a pleasant 75 degrees.

My hostel is right near People's Park and just a short walk from from the famed Bund and just a block away from Yunnan Road..."the best Chinese street food in Shanghai". I sampled...it was good. Tonight I walked down to the Bund along the Huang Pu river. Looking out at the insta-city on the Pudong side was very interesting. Rumor has it that it was fishing villages and farmland a few decades ago...now it looks like a mini Manhattan. The empire state building is replaced by a crazy tower with giant floating balls on it.

Shanghai seems to be obsessed with hats. Not the people, but the buildings. Everything is new and heavily stylized. It is a stark contrast from the vertical necessity of Hong Kong.

I walked two of the major "action streets" in Shanghai and found them dead. I will have to poll some locals and find the fun nightlife.

EmmaKate keeps asking me when Jeffie is going to come visit her...so send us a photo so we can "visit" with you!

I'm there with you - gotta give you some credit for hanging in there...sounds like treacherous territory. Glad you are in a metropolitan setting again - I'm sure you are too. take care man - post more pics. I'm a visual kinda dude.

Shang-Fry, Congrats on navigating to another country. China - now that is impressive, not too people from N.America can say they have been to China.

Nik and I tend to use TripAdvisor for recommendation - it is not the travel bible but it gives you good insight.

You may see some of the elder ladies with their feet bound (never understood that one) and heard they have some pretty fun advertisements too.

I am with the whole lot of us...More pictures please.

Cheers, stay safe, and culture-out.

Very cool...I love the updates too. Glad to hear there is refuge from the heat in Shanghai. Enjoy it. I just got a message from Amy Kushner (who is in Beijing right now). Her email address is askushie@yahoo.com in case you get to hook up. I don't know when she is leaving. Is the tension of the old and the new still very apparent in Shanghai? I remember strolling through the old city with that crazy silver ball building on the horizon. It's an interesting place.
